XRAI — Open Format for Spatial Media

A.I. / Cloud, XR / IoT

An AI-first spatial document format: structure, intent, provenance and edit history in one portable file.

XRAI is an open, AI-first document format for generative spatial media — the interchange layer that makes a world portable.

“XRAI is the DNA of a Portal — one portable document carries a scene’s structure, intent, provenance and edit history, and renders on any engine. Store the generation process, not just the output.”

Where glTF and KHR_gaussian_splatting deliver geometry and OpenXR handles the runtime, XRAI captures the layer above them: what the author meant, where each element came from, and how the scene has changed over time. That makes generative and procedural content re-editable rather than baked, and gives provenance a permanent home — the groundwork for personal data ownership in spatial media.

The specification underpins the Portals platform described in the CVPR 2026 paper, and encodes webpages, repositories, papers and calendars into navigable spatial knowledge graphs.
